One of Expedition Bali’s experienced drivers / guides will collect you from the airport or from your Bali accommodation, then drive you to the most western tip of Bali to reach the ferry port of Gilimanuk.  You will have the opportunity to stop and take photographs of the diverse Bali landscapes, from steep rice
terraces to stretches of white sand beach; from bustling villages to small farmlands, and, stop at a local warung for lunch along the way and experience traditional village food.

The ferry ride across the highway that is Ketapang – Gilimanuk waters is a terrific experience, and you will get a sense of the volume of trade that occurs between the Indonesian islands.

End the day at Banyuwangi with dinner at a Javanese restaurant and time to rest at a comfortable, family-owned homestay.

KAWAH IJEN

Resume your adventure at around 01:00 am. Climb aboard our vehicle with the Expedition Java team and head out through the plantations and rainforests, with their giant ferns and tall trees, to the base of Mount Ijen.

Your experienced hiking guide will lead you through the darkness on an adventurous climb up Mount Ijen to the peak of Kawah Ijen, the volcanic crater. Turn your torch to the stunning natural scenery.

Take a well-earned rest on the edge of the crater at an altitude of 2,386 metres and witness fumaroles that eject tons of sulfur every day, ignited by the hot gas escaping the volcano and causing the blue fire to dance on the landscape. Then, feast your eyes on the best panorama of the sun rising over the one-kilometre-wide turquoise-coloured acidic crater lake. The reflection of the biggest reservoir of hot and acidic water on Earth on the walls of the Ijen crater is indescribable.

Watch the sulfur mine workers descend into the crater and climb back up the dangerous path with loads as heavy as 80 kilograms on their shoulders. Remember to take lots of photographs as evidence that you have visited one of the rarest phenomena on earth, purchasing some volcanic sulphur will help the worker with a
little extra cash.
