The village of Trunyan, with its tiny population of 600, is located on the eastern shores of Lake Batur, at the foot of Mount Abang. Trunyan village is believed to have been founded between 882-914 AD and is inhabited by descendants of the native Balinese – the Bali Aga, the people who predate the arrival of the Hindu Majapahit kingdom in the 16th century.Mount Abang is the highest point on the rim of the Batur caldera and the third-highest mountain in all of Bali at about 2,150 metres.

Meet your tour guide, a trained four-wheel drive specialist, at the Expedition Bali Adventure Camp and climb aboard one of our custom-built, four-wheel drive vehicles. Your guide is a certified member of the Mount Batur Guide Association, so expect great stories about the history of the region, interesting information
about the features of the landscape, all with a great sense of humour.

You are in safe hands during your rugged four-wheel drive up Mount Abang, because Expedition Bali is the only licensed four-wheel drive adventure tour operator in the Kintamani region.

When you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the sun rising over the mountainous landscape and beyond. You can see across Bali’s beaches to the ocean and out to the surrounding Indonesian islands. You can also see the erupting Mount Agung, the steaming Mount Batur, and the sleeping Mount Abang. Lake Batur hugs the base of the mountain and you will have a bird’s eye view of the family livelihoods the lake supports.

The view from this point is worth a million dollars. Be sure to touch the clouds while you are enjoying your breakfast.

The three-hour trek across Mount Abang, along the Trunyan Wall and down to Trunyan village will give insight to the region’s unique agriculture as well as show you the different types of traditional homes scattered through out the farms.

The setting for much of the trek is a spectacular-green mountain backdrop and deep blue lake, with a mist-shrouded Mount Batur rising up dramatically on the other side.  The path to Trunyan zigzags down the inside face of the crater wall on the southeast slope of Mount Abang.  The view is simply breathtaking.

Trunyan is a small ancient village situated on the shores of Lake Batur, far from the influence of the urban community and immigrants from the outer islands, especially foreign tourists.  Culturally and ethnically outside the mainstream, Trunyan provides evidence of how Bali’s earliest people lived.  The primal inhabitants are mostly fishermen, their harsh expressions mirroring a harsh life.

Trunyan reflects a conservative cultural mindset and a religious life clinging to the customs of the village, which starts every day when the sun rises at the foot of Mount Batur.  Ask your guide why, in ancient times, the lake goddess Dewi Danu was lured down from heaven.

Your water adventure includes a boat ride from the eastern shores of Lake Batur across to the landing at Batur Natural Hot Spring.  If you are game, ask your guide if you can stop at the Kuburan or Sema Wajah cemetery. A very old tradition of the villagers here is to leave the deceased in the open air instead of cremating the dead in a ngaben ceremony, which is practiced in the rest of Bali. Marvel at the Taru Menyan (the incense tree or fragrant tree) that watches over the corpses and neutralises the foul smell.

To complete your day, stop for an a la carte lunch and a long soak in the healing waters of Batur Natural Hot Spring. Enjoy the photographic panorama of beautiful Lake Batur from a completely different angle.
