The Batur Caldera is one of Bali’s most famous landscapes – a combination of ancient lava fields; caves that will have you think you are on another planet; and, a spectacular crescent-shaped volcanic lake watched over by the water goddess of the Balinese Hindus, Dewi Danu. Tiny farms, growing all manner of fresh produce, are scattered throughout the caldera on every patch of arable land available. Much of the region is protected with UNESCO Geopark status.

Batur UNESCO Global Geopark includes two volcanic calderas and presents a complete volcanic landscape with caldera walls, cones and craters, fumaroles, hot springs, a lake, lava flows, pyroclastic flows and tephra. The uniqueness of the area’s geology of volcanic origin, endemic flora and fauna, and original culture motivated by the Balinese Hindu religion is a perfect combination of different heritages of the Earth.

The Volcano Explorer Tour begins at the Expedition Bali Adventure Camp. Meet your tour guide, a trained 4WD specialist, and climb aboard one of our custom-built, four-wheel drive vehicles. Your guide is also a certified member of the Mount Batur Guide Association, so expect great stories about the history of the region, interesting information about the features of the landscape, all with a great sense of humour. You are in safe hands on this off-road adventure.

The first stop on your Volcano Explorer Tour is at Lava Ball Point. Hop out of the Expedition Bali vehicle and feel the incredible Kintamani landscape surround you. You will find a large cave formed from a lava flow and you will wonder if you are on a different planet. Ask your guide why it is called a holy cave?

The second stop is the volcanic lava flow of 1964. How did it happen? Your tour guide has the answer. You will be surrounded by world famous black Lava formations and will witness the extraordinary view of an active volcano in the distance. Incredible photo opportunities await.

As the guide navigates the four-wheel drive vehicle through the lava fields to get to the 1864 lava flow, you will witness the local farmers working in their small fields and vegetable gardens.

Are you ready for the frozen lava tour? The four-wheel drive vehicles pack a lot of power once you hit the trail.  You’ll discover what the vehicle can do as you crawl over the rugged terrain, known as the road of no return.

Take photographs of this wild ride to have your friends back home envious of your Expedition Bali volcano adventure.

To complete your day, stop for an a la carte lunch and a long soak in the healing waters of Batur Natural Hot Spring. Enjoy the photographic panorama of beautiful Lake Batur from a completely different angle.
