Established in 2012, Expedition Bali has been thrilling visitors as Kintamani’s premier off-road tour company, the only licensed tour company to responsibly four-wheel drive in the UNESCO Geopark.

Expedition Bali offers a variety of tours that encompass history, nature and geology, all complimented by some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of natural wonders that you will ever likely see with your own eyes.

Expedition Bali prides itself on providing exceptional customer service.  If you have a question not covered on this page, please call or email one of our friendly customer service representatives.

We are always happy to help.

Expedition Bali is known for its off-road adventures and every tour has an off-road component.  The off-road experiences range from exploring the vast lava fields of the Mount Batur volcanic eruptions to winding up the heavily vegetated tracks of Mount Abang in Bali; and, from making the steep ascent of Mount Pananjakan to crossing the flat savannah at Mount Bromo in Java.

Expedition Bali’s custom built four-wheel drive is designed for the comfort and safety of our guests.  And, all Expedition Bali drivers are recruited and trained especially for four-wheel driving.

Expedition Bali is fully insured to give you even more peace of mind.

Expedition Bali is the ONLY tour operator licensed to four-wheel drive in the UNESCO Geopark in the Batur Caldera.  This gives us access to two volcanic calderas and presents a complete volcanic landscape with caldera walls, cones and craters, fumaroles, hot springs, a lake, lava flows, pyroclastic flows and tephra.

The uniqueness of the area’s geology of volcanic origin, endemic flora and fauna, and original culture motivated by the Balinese Hindu religion is a perfect combination of different heritages of the Earth.  You can only see this with Expedition Bali.

Expedition Bali guides are certified by the Mount Batur Guide Association, which ensures our guests are safe and taken care of during all our tours.  We are always up to date with any news about the volcanos and their surrounds, and we are very responsible in the way we navigate the landscapes.

Expedition Bali and Expedition Java tours depart at a variety of times throughout the morning.  Remember, if you are being picked up from your Bali accommodation, your start time will be an hour or two earlier than the tour start time.

Yes.  We prefer our guests reserve their Expedition Bali seats with an advanced reservation of a minimum 48 hours.  This helps us plan everything you need for an extraordinary adventure; plus, it gives you the opportunity to book into the tour you really want to do.

Note:  Peak holiday seasons book out quickly, so plan ahead and reserve your seats as early as possible.

Expedition Bali tours are loved by people of all ages.  However, children under two years old might distract you from your adventure.  It is a good idea for the little people to be occupied in a more age-appropriate way while you are on tour with us.

All children up to 16 years of age that are participating in an Expedition Bali or Expedition Java tour must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.

If a guest cancels a booking with more than 48-hours notice prior to the scheduled departure time, Expedition Bali does not charge a cancellation fee.

If a booking is cancelled within 48 hours of the scheduled departure time, the guest is responsible for paying 100% of the tour / expedition fees and no refund of pre-paid fees will be provided.

If a booked guest does not present for the scheduled tour / expedition, the guest is responsible for paying 100% of the tour / expedition fees and no refund of pre-paid fees will be provided.

Expedition Bali will give you an opportunity to reschedule your tour for a later time if you cannot make your tour within the 48-hour cancellation window.

We advise that you wear / bring clothing that will support you when the vehicle stops and you have the opportunity to get out and explore the different locations with your guide.  Mount Batur (Bali) has an elevation of over 1,500 metres above sea level, which means it can be very cool and there may be strong winds.  Mount Bromo (Java) is extremely cold right before the sun rises.  Consider bringing a warm jacket or windbreaker.

You should also wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a swimming suit and towel.

Here is your list:

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for hiking, trekking or climbing
  • Sturdy walking shoes or sport shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Change of clothes
  • Swimming suit
  • Windbreaker or warm jacket

Remember to bring your camera!

All Expedition Bali transfer vehicles are air-conditioned for guest comfort.

Expedition Bali’s custom-built four-wheel drive is also designed with your comfort in mind.  The sides can be enclosed to protect you from the elements, and opened for a complete view of the landscapes.

Expedition Java uses Toyota Landcruisers for ascending Kawah Ijen and Mount Bromo.  Every vehicle is air-conditioned for both heating and cooling.

With the owner of Expedition Bali having extensive experience in logistics, you can be assured that all vehicles are safe and well maintained.

Expedition Bali and Expedition Java trekking tours have varying degrees of difficulty. If you have any concerns about fitness or health, please talk with an Expedition Bali customer service representative about what adventure is most suited to your ability.

For a tour without trekking, try the Champagne Breakfast Tour or the Three Elements Tour.  Both tours include a four-wheel drive to Million Dollar Point and exploration of the Batur Caldera.

For those looking for a greater adventure, the Sunrise Volcano Tour includes both ascent and descent of  Mount Batur, plus a trek around the crater of the volcano.  The Blue Fire Tour of Kawah Ijen includes trekking and some climbing.

For an easier downhill trek, book into the Trunyan Wall Trekking Tour.  This tour encompasses the most magnificent views of the Batur Caldera from a location that is rarely seen by people outside of those belonging to the local communities.  This tour is suitable for children.

For adventure without trekking, book into the Off-Road Discovery Tour and take a two hour quad bike ride around the ricefields, jungles and plantations before taking a two-hour four-wheel drive tour through the lava flows of Mount Batur.

All Expedition Bali guides are certified by the Mount Batur Guide Association, which ensures you receive the best quality service, the highest level of care, and the greatest trekking experience available.

All Expedition Bali tours include pick up from and drop off to your Bali accommodation, wherever you are.  Make sure you provide accurate details in your online form or to your Expedition Bali customer service representative when you make your booking.

Note that pick up needs to be coordinated with your tour start time, so be ready approximately two hours prior to your tour.

Expedition Bali and Expedition Java tours operate rain or shine.  Our team are always monitoring both weather and volcano conditions and will give advanced notice if the itinerary changes at all.  Expedition Bali vehicles are inspected daily and have a comprehensive maintenance schedule; and, all drivers and guides are trained to ensure you are safe at all times.

Bali experiences many micro-climates, and most rainfall is short-lived. So, if it is raining in Kuta, it is highly unlikely to be raining at Kintamani.  If you have any concerns about weather conditions, speak to one of Expedition Bali’s customer service representatives for more information.

If you do happen to tour on a rainy day, we have rain ponchos and umbrellas in our vehicles.  You might even get a unique opportunity to photograph spectacular rainbows and waterfalls in fascinating landscapes, which is a terrific experience in itself.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development.

A UNESCO Global Geopark uses its geological heritage, in connection with all other aspects of the area’s natural and cultural heritage, to enhance awareness and understanding of key issues facing society in the context of the dynamic planet we all live on, mitigating the effects of climate change and reducing the impact of natural disasters.

By raising awareness of the importance of the area’s geological heritage in history and society today, UNESCO Global Geoparks give local people a sense of pride in their region and strengthen their identification with the area. The creation of innovative local enterprises, new jobs and high quality training courses is stimulated as new sources of revenue are generated through sustainable geotourism, while the geological resources of the area are protected.

On 20 September 2012, UNESCO made Mount Batur Caldera a part of the Global Geoparks Network.  The Network has grown to include 120 sites in 33 countries.

Every aspect of Bali’s geography and ecology is influenced by the towering range of volcanic peaks that dominate the island.  They have created its landforms, periodically regenerated its soils, and helped produce the dramatic downpours that provide the island with life-giving water.  The Balinese recognise these geophysical facts of life, and the island’s many volcanos, lakes, and springs are considered by them to be sacred.

Bali is continually being re-formed by volcanic action.  The island lies over a major subduction zone, where the Indo-Australian plate collides with the rigid Sunda plate.  Whilst Mount Agung eruptions are violent, they are far less frequent than the more active and less violent Mount Batur.

The steep, narrow valleys throughout Bali’s mountain ranges are not good for building dams to water wet rice cultivation. The Balinese have instead devised many sophisticated irrigation systems that optimise the water available from rain and rivers.  This is known as the Subak system.

Bali may be small, but its physical geography is complex, creating an island of great variety.  Three major areas emerge: the mountains, the coastal lowlands and the limestone fringes.  The mountains are lofty and spectacular, dominated by Mount Agung and its neighbouring Mount Abang and Mount Batu.  Dramatic lava flows on the north-eastern flanks of Agung are Bali’s newest land-forms, demonstrating what the entire island probably looked like a million years ago.
